How did you find out about CrossFit Rising Legends?

Why did you want to try this? My cousin Elvin started going to CrossFit Rising Legends (CFRL) and suggested that I just check it out. I was already doing powerlifting on my own, so he said I might like it. I honestly had no intention of joining. I just wanted to show support for my cousin’s interests. Fast forward over one year later, now I go to CFRL almost every day! I love it!

What was your goal?

There were some temporary goals along the way such as losing weight to fit into a dress for my cousin’s wedding. Since joining CFRL, I have been able to go from a size XXL to XL/L which has been awesome! I can shop at more stores now, instead of just plus size stores, and I feel better in my clothes. Also, my regular attendance at classes has helped me maintain the weight loss.

How does Rising Legends differ from other experiences you’ve had at other Gyms?

I used to go to one of those generic gyms that had a cheap monthly fee. I started going there almost every day, and then my attendance began to taper off. It was always crowded. I was always struggling to get to equipment and machines before someone else started using them. The bathrooms were always gross. Equipment was sometimes broken. And it was a very solitary existence there, even though I was surrounded by people everywhere. Then, I joined CFRL. Even though the gym membership started out small in size, it was a fantastic group of people. I felt welcomed and supported. There was a camaraderie there that I’ve never experienced anywhere in my life before. And the members, new and old, have become my fit family.

Why do you still CrossFit?

It’s important to take care of yourself first. So, I continue to do CrossFit for me. I do it to improve my health and well-being. It’s the first time in my life that I’ve actually enjoyed exercising! As much as I may dread a challenging workout, I feel so accomplished after I’ve completed it.

Has anything changed for you mentally? Physically?

I believe there’s a direct correlation between physical fitness and mental well-being. And I have definitely seen it personally since joining CFRL. Becoming physically stronger is truly an uplifting feeling. On days when I’m in such an emotionally weakened state, I feel empowered when I lift weights at CFRL. The environment and community are so positive and supportive. CFRL has become my escape from the world. It’s a place where I can just clear my mind of all of the stressors in my life, even if it’s just for one hour. One hour where I can focus solely on myself. There, I’m always in good company and I always have a good laugh. It’s my happy place.

What would you say to someone new who’s thinking about starting?

Try it! First class is free, so what have you got to lose? (Except weight!) It’s the most effective one hour workout I’ve ever had in my life! CrossFit at CFRL is also not as daunting as you may think. Honestly, I was intimidated when I first walked through the doors. I walked into the lobby and heard the sounds of barbells clanging down the hallway. It’s a pretty frightening sound when you hear it for the first time. I tentatively navigated down the hallway expecting to see intense, cold people. To my surprise I was greeted by happy, welcoming faces! And before I knew it, I was one of those athletes swinging around the barbell. The unknown can be scary, but just drop in and you’ll realize there’s nothing to be scared about!

Anything else you would like to add?

We can make all the excuses we want about why we can’t exercise, but we need to take care of ourselves first. The workouts at CFRL take just one hour. It’s one hour to focus on just you, your health, and your well-being, while surrounded by a friendly and supportive community. Joining CFRL is one of the best decisions I have made and I am truly thankful for the positive effect it has had on my life.
